The Merlin helicopters of 845 Naval Air Squadron carried out gunnery exercises at the Tain Air Weapons Range in Scotland, as part of a routine training to maintain operational readiness.

These activities ensure that pilots and crew remain proficient in weapon handling and essential tactical procedures for Royal Navy missions.

Recently, the Merlin MK4 helicopters reached Full Operational Capability (FOC), solidifying their role in maritime and amphibious operations. As part of the Merlin Life Sustainment Program, 25 aircraft were upgraded with new mission planning systems, advanced training equipment, and structural reinforcements. These improvements allow the helicopters to be deployed across various ships in the British fleet, enhancing their efficiency in coastal strike and air support missions.

The upgrades include foldable rotors and tail for better storage and operation aboard, as well as a new set of avionics that extend the aircraft’s life until 2030.

The modernized fleet, developed by Leonardo in partnership with the UK government, also includes augmented reality simulators for advanced crew training, further boosting the UK’s amphibious capability.
